The Mental Tug of War

Oh, she acts so white

Oh, she’s way too black

Oh, she acts like she’s better than everyone

Oh, she should hide her Afro-Caribbean roots

But, she doesn’t know her true ancestors

But she should tone down her blackness

But is she black enough?

She should speak proper

Man, she knows too many fancy words

She should step down a few notches

The mental tug of war pushes the mind…

Left and right

Back and forth, with no direction to go… not a path in site

Trying to fit into a society that can’t fully grasp her true identity

– to be a woman and feminine, but not a feminist

– to be black, but always in second place:

The supportive wife, the strong black woman, the mother of all

Never the broken one= the human… just black girl magic

Hair needs to be flat, not nappy

Curls need to form… not nappy

No bald bitches here

The goal is to attain the hair length like Rapunzel

Nose too big – skin too dark

Push and pull

Left and right

Back and forth

Trying to fit into a society

That can’t fully grasp her true identity
